Hello readers! Today I’d like to talk about something that many of us are all too familiar with. Sometimes things in our lives aren’t quite going right and we don’t’ know how to handle our emotions. Unfortunately everything that happens to you isn’t controllable and there’s no way to prevent every single problem or hardship you might face. However, your mental well-being has a lot to do with your reactions to these issues, and whether or not you engage in self-destructive coping mechanisms or find more positive ways to cope. So here are some strategies for you to try the next time you’re feeling down.
- Call a loved one. You don’t have to tell them about all of your troubles if you don’t’ want to but talking to someone and having that connection can make a difference in how you’re feeling. This will remind you that you are loved and you’re not alone. If someone I care about is going through a hard time, I’d definitely want him or her to talk to me. Whether it’s your mom, dad, cousin, best friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, aunt or uncle, just call someone who you feel close to.
- Get lost in a book. Your local library or bookstore is most likely only a few miles away. This is a great way to focus on something else, and temporarily experience a different perspective. When I’m feeling down, I personally like to read a good love story, or a book about someone overcoming a challenge in life. I always finish these books feeling renewed and refreshed and with a new take on my life. Don’t take books for granted. I prefer books because they require you to use your imagination and think deeply.
- Cook yourself a nice meal. This is a way to treat yourself without spending a bunch of money. The internet is filled with different recipes that you can try for cheap. I always feel good when I cook myself a nice fancy dinner. Make your meal, play some relaxing music, light a candle, and open a bottle of wine. Just enjoy doing something nice for yourself. Creating things and doing nice things for yourself no matter how small can improve your sense of self-worth.
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter one day. Doing things like this can help you feel like you are useful and what you do matters. It can also improve someone else’s day. This will also remind you how truly fortunate you are and no matter what you’re dealing with, things could always be worse.
- Go for a walk. This is very simple. Go for a walk around your neighborhood or your community. This will give you the opportunity to notice the little things and get a breath of fresh air. We spend so much time in our own personal bubbles that we forget there’s a whole world out there where we can witness beauty. Hearing the birds chirping, listening to children play outside or observing a nice garden among many other things are all beautiful experiences.
- Dance to your favorite music. Your favorite music is your favorite music for a reason. It means something to you. What’s even better than listening to it is dancing around to it to get a good workout. You’ll get your heart rate up and feel like you are expressing yourself and letting out your feelings. Besides, what’s more fun than a dance party?
- Set a new goal. This can be anything that you can set out to accomplish over a set period of time. You could set a goal to run three miles. Or a goal to do fifty pushups. They can also be other things like save a few hundred dollars, go vegetarian by a certain time and etc. It needs to be a measurable goal that is important to you for a specific reason. Pursuing goals will give you something to focus on and once you achieve these goals, you’ll feel accomplished and confidence which can help your mood tremendously.
- Watch a movie. Movies can be a good distraction. They can show you great stories that inspire your own life. There’s nothing like keying down to relax and watch a good movie. If you watch a new movie with a friend, you can even make plans to discuss it afterwards.
- Write down all of your accomplishments. This is an instant mood booster. We all have had moments in our lives where we reached a goal we were looking forward to reaching or done something great for ourselves or others. If it’s not something you think about often, it’s easy to make a habit of focusing on the negatives about yourself and your life. Once you focus on the positives and remember there is a silver lining, your mindset changes.
- Practice gratitude. This is another mood booster. When you take the time to be grateful for the good things you have in your life, you’ll feel better. When we’re feeling down, part of the reason is we’re continuously focusing on the things that are going wrong but not the things that are going right. If you can walk, talk, see, hear, you have a roof over your head and know where your next meal is coming from, you are extremely fortunate.
Well guys, these are things that can help you when you’re feeling down. There’s nothing wrong with feeling down sometimes because if you never feel down, you aren’t human. You cannot be happy all of the time. However, these strategies here are great for rebalancing your emotions and your life.
